WANDER DIVAS: BE IN THE KNOW
Travel today has taken on a few new challenges, but with proper preparation, they can be easily overcome. Political and health issues at your destination can change quickly. It would be a good idea to do some research on your destination well in advance, so you know what you need to do to travel in a healthy and safe way.
Depending on your destination, you may need to update your routine vaccinations or get some that you don’t have, especially if you are traveling outside the USA. You should also be aware of travel notices and warnings about your destination. The links below are for international travel and we have provided a step by step guide for navigating.
- Go to WWW.CDC.GOV (Center for Disease Control and Prevention)
- Click on Travelers Health
- Click on Destinations in the drop-down menu
- Click on the country or countries you will be traveling to
Here you will find Travelers Health Notices, Vaccines and Medicine recommendations, Health and Safety Tips, Healthy Travel Packing Tips specific for the country you are traveling to as well as What to Do after you return from the trip if you feel sick.
It is important to check with your doctor to see if you need to update routine vaccinations. Since the doctor has your medication records, he or she can also review recommended medications, and confirm which ones you should take. Some inoculations or medications may only be available through special clinics set up for travelers. Passport Health and Travel Clinics of America have locations in Volusia County. There is also a tab to click to Find a Clinic on the website, also located on the left side of the page.
When you have finished there, go back to the menu on the left side of the page and click on Travel Notices.
- Enter the name of the country or disease you would like to know about
- Check for travel notices and warnings
At the time of this writing, COVID is the main reason for so many notices and warnings. If you are interested in knowing about other diseases, type the name under Travel Notices. Measles and polio have become more prevalent worldwide in the past few years so a booster may be in order.
For travel advisories that may or may or not be COVID related, go to http://travel.state.gov
- Click on Travel Advisories. An alphabetic list of countries appears.
- Click on the country you would like to know about and follow the government’s recommendations.
In addition to COVID, political and other social issues or unrest may be some reasons for travel notices. You can sign up for automatic notifications by going to Travel.state.gov/stayingconnected
and register through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive updated notifications for the country/countries you are planning to visit.
You can also register if you are not planning a trip but just want to keep an eye on a particular destination. Go to STEP.state.gov and click on the Staying at Home? tab.
